Teaching Philosophy

As a lifelong musician, I’ve been exposed to the power of music to shape the way people feel, think, and act, and am a firm believer in music’s ability to transform lives, cultures, and societies. As a music educator, I am able to bring music into young people’s lives to help them see new perspectives, learn more about themselves and those around them, and to ultimately possess a skill set that will connect them more deeply with their surroundings. This is my ultimate goal -- to inform youth about the world they live in, and how to be a meaningful part of it. Development of musical skills and technique are at the core of my teaching, as they serve as the vehicle through which I teach young individuals how to be strong, respectful, informed, confident, responsible, and independent citizens.

To ensure positive experiences for my students, I aim to teach rich and culturally responsive curriculum in a safe and supportive classroom environment. Through study of music that is diversely influenced, students will understand the role of musicians to use their skills to speak that which cannot be said. Musicians are extraordinarily equipped to transform every space they enter, infusing positivity, joy, and profound sensitivity into the daily lives of themselves and others. Through my work as an educator, I strive to help my students feel prepared and eager to take risks, explore new perspectives, bring light to others, and give voices to those who have been silenced.
